Palawan Mangkono

Palawan Mangkono is a small tree that grows to a height of 1-10 meters. This tree is one of five ironwood trees endemic to the Philippines. Bagoadlau (Xanthostemon philippinensis Merr.), Mangkono (Xanthostemon verdugonianus Naves), Mapilig (Xanthostemon bracteatus Merr.), Palawan Mangkono (Xanthostemon speciosus Merr.) and Sierra Madre Mangkono (Xanthostemon fruticosus Peter G. Wilson & Co.). Three of these trees are considered critically endangered, the Bagoadlau, Mapilig and Sierra Madre Mangkono. The flowers of the Palawan Mangkono look like red spikes.
